In the wake of Hurricane Maria, we at Organización Pro Ambiente Sustentable (OPAS) and Valija Gitana have temporarily shifted our focus to working on interim relief and recovery efforts.
Please help us implement sustainable interim recovery solutions in the communities in Puerto Rico that are most in need at this time. Donations can be made via PayPal. In the transaction description, please specify #mariareliefeffortpr.
How OPAS and Valija Gitana are responding to Hurricane Maria
We know it will be at least six months before electricity and water are fully restored to the most secluded and affected parts of the island.
To help bring long-term relief, we will acquire and distribute supplies such as water filters, solar-powered lanterns, and solar chargers to address critical needs such as potable water and refrigeration.
We will also help organic farmers whose crops have been destroyed by providing supplies such as seeds for replanting.
For more than a decade, we have forged relationships with municipalities, schools, and other organizations across Puerto Rico, making us uniquely qualified to connect with impacted communities. Once communication services have been fully restored to the island, OPAS will coordinate directly with the municipalities most impacted by the hurricane, such as Guayama, Toa Baja, Utuado, and many more.
Our organization is dedicated to sustainability and environmental education, and this recovery effort will reflect our mission. For example, water filters will last longer and create less waste than bottled water. Solar-powered lanterns are much more environmentally friendly than emergency lighting systems that require batteries.
Based in Puerto Rico, OPAS is a NGO 501c3 nonprofit organization created to find solutions for a more sustainable and resilient island.
